Francesco II Gonzaga, marchese di Mantova, fu Capitano della Repubblica di Venezia sul finire del ‘400. Con l’inizio del nuovo secolo, fiutato il mutamento delle condizioni politiche nella penisola diventò luogotenente generale dell’esercito pontificio.
Si trattò di un tradimento che fece scalpore, perché proprio il papa Giulio II era stato il promotore della Lega di Cambrai, una mega-alleanza dei maggiori stati europei volta ad annientare prima e spartirsi poi i domini veneziani in terraferma.
Nell’agosto del 1509 Francesco II era all’assedio di Legnago, un paese non molto distante da Verona. Qui, con una azione a sorpresa viene assalito e catturato da Girolamo Pompei, condottiero veronese detto il malanchino per un dolore alla schiena che lo accompagnerà tutta la vita. Il Pompei porta una così ghiotta preda direttamente a Venezia.
Questa premessa è necessaria per capire l’importanza della famiglia Pompei nel territorio di Illasi: il doge Domenico Priuli infatti, per ricompensarlo dell’exploit di Legnago, gli dona in feudo i territori di Illasi. Pompei – visto il periodo non proprio pacifico – decide quindi di installarsi nel castello di Illasi, situato su una collina in una zona strategica. Siamo nel 1517, e alla famiglia Pompei era stato concesso anche il titolo nobiliare di Conti di Illasi.
Trascorre circa un secolo di relativa calma e tranquillità e la famiglia Pompei decide di trasferirsi di qualche centinaio di metri più a valle, in una villa che già esisteva all’epoca di Girolamo. La villa cinquecentesca venne inglobata in un edificio più consono allo status della famiglia Pompei e sul finire del ‘600 ulteriormente ingrandita. Nel 1685 infatti si procedette all’espansione della villa, su progetto di Vincenzo Pellesina (architetto anche delle scuderie del Palazzo di Versailles). I lavori si protrassero per un secolo, e non furono nemmeno del tutto completati: si può infatti notare come l’ala sinistra differisca da quella destra, essendo ancora una parte originale del progetto del 1615.
Al corpo centrale della villa, secondo uno schema architettonico molto comune nella terraferma veneta, vennero aggiunte le barchesse monumentali. Chiudono la proprietà un giardino all’italiana e un cosiddetto giardino romantico che dalla villa si espande fino ai piedi del colle su cui ancora rimangono le rovine del castello.
Di notevole interesse gli interni della villa che, assurdamente, non erano fotografabili (così come non era visitabile il bellissimo giardino all’italiana). Il salone d’onore e le stanze al piano nobile contengono una serie di affreschi con soggetti mitologici e pastorali ad opera di Giambettino Cignaroli, Francesco Lorenzi, Andrea Porta e Marco Marcola. Nelle stanze sono appese anche opere di altri artisti in voga nella verona del ‘700. Al piano terra, nella sala da pranzo, affreschi pastorali del Porta ed una cappella privata. Da segnalare anche il bellissimo pavimento d’epoca in terrazzo veneziano, a rimarcare quasi simbolicamente il legame che lega la famiglia proprietaria della villa alla civiltà e alla storia della Serenissima repubblica.
